Meet your Diabetes Advocate
Florey Miller
Registered Dietician/Diabetes Educator
Florey is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator. Her areas of expertise include diabetes, heart disease and weight loss. She has worked as clinical dietitian for Blake Medical Center and the Heart Center, and as diabetes educator at Doctors Hospital. Before going back to school to earn her Master of Science degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Florida, Florey worked for more than ten years in the natural food industry. She is available to meet with members for diabetes management, prevention of diabetes, weight loss, blood pressure management, healthy eating during pregnancy, digestive disorders or any other nutrition concern.
Diabetes Education and Lifestyle Programs
The following programs are available to all members with diabetes covered under the Manatee YourChoice Health Plan. These programs are also used as education choices in order to qualify for the Best/Ultimate Health Plan.

Diabetes Workshop
A two session evening program held monthly at the Central Library. Gives a complete overview of diabetes care. Topics include managing blood glucose levels, insulin resistance, hypoglycemia, medications, nutrition and more. This workshop is strongly recommended for those newly diagnosed or those needing a jumpstart to better control.

Diabetes Workshop Schedule
Diabetes Road Trip
A four session program held weekly at various worksites at lunchtime. Covers healthy eating, monitoring, being active, preventing complications and coping with stress. Informal, includes games and discussions. Optional individual meetings following the session are available for meter downloads, nutrition discussions, etc.

Change For Good Workshop
A six session highly interactive workshop designed to educate and engage participants in their own process of lifestyle change. It asks participants to identify current problem behaviors that prevent them from reaching and maintaining their desired goals. This workshop gives hands-on experience with tools, tips and strategies to change those behaviors for good. These sessions are held in the evenings at the Manatee Service Center.

Exercise Basics
Four individual sessions with our “YourChoice” Fitness Specialist to introduce participants to different types of exercise and help individuals make physical activity a part of their life.
At Home Education
Self-study on your computer and online in many topic areas of interest for people with diabetes. The learning modules can be completed online, by downloading a PDF file or by using the Power Point program on your computer. Diabetes Learning Modules
Qualifying for the BEST/ULTIMATE Health Plan
Each year members with Diabetes (age 19 and older) must complete all items on the Diabetes Qualifying Form in order to qualify for the BEST Plan (or Ultimate Plan for nicotine free members).

Each quarter the “Manatee Captain’s Newsletter – Navigating the waters of your diabetes care” is distributed to all members with Diabetes. The Newsletter includes information specific to Diabetes Care, tips, recipes, and upcoming events.
